How to redact a utility bill PDF safely
Utility bills are often requested as proof of address, but the full document can reveal an account number, service address, phone number, payment history, and meter information. Prepare a purpose-limited copy instead of forwarding the original bill.
Identify what the recipient actually needs
For proof of address, the recipient may need your name, service address, provider name, and statement date. Ask whether the account number, usage chart, balance, payment method, and barcodes are necessary. Remove unrelated pages before redacting.
Search repeated identifiers
Account numbers often appear in the header, footer, payment stub, and barcode. Search for both spaced and unspaced versions. Review page images because OCR can miss faint digits, and inspect annotations and form fields for values that do not appear visibly.
Verify the final PDF
Create a separate redacted copy. Reopen it in a different viewer, search for the account number and address variants, and check that no hidden text, attachment, comment, or previous revision still contains the removed data. Keep the original protected rather than overwriting it.
