How to redact a signature from a PDF
A signature can be an image, a vector path, an annotation appearance, part of a scan, or a cryptographic signature field. Those are different PDF objects and require different treatment.
Identify what kind of signature you have
A handwritten signature in a scanned contract is image pixels. A pasted signature may be a separate image with transparency. A drawn signature can be vector paths. An e-signature platform may create an appearance plus form-field data, audit metadata, and links. A digital signature is cryptographic evidence tied to the document bytes.
Inspect the PDF rather than assuming from appearance. If the document is digitally signed, any edit will ordinarily invalidate that signature. Preserve the signed original and create a clearly labeled redacted derivative.
Remove every representation
For scans and pasted images, destroy the pixels and re-encode the affected image. For vector ink, remove the drawing objects. Clear signature-field values and annotations rather than only flattening the visual appearance. Remove OCR text if the signer's typed name appears invisibly under the scan.
Search the signer's printed name and initials elsewhere: signature blocks, certificates, headers, and audit pages often repeat them. Review metadata and attachments for the original signed document.
Verify the derivative
Extract images and annotations from the final PDF, inspect form fields, and search for the name. Confirm that the signature field no longer carries signer details or an appearance stream. Keep the original signature-validation record separate if authenticity must be demonstrated.

Will redacting a digitally signed PDF invalidate the signature?
Editing the signed bytes ordinarily breaks cryptographic validation. Keep the signed original and issue a separate redacted derivative with a clear audit trail.
Is flattening a signature field enough?
No. Flattening may preserve the visible appearance while field data or signature dictionaries remain. Remove and verify the underlying objects.
Can a handwritten signature be searchable?
The ink itself usually is not, but a nearby typed name or OCR result can be. Review both the image and text layer.
