How to redact a passport copy in a PDF
A passport page is an image-dense identity document. Removing the printed name while leaving the portrait or machine-readable zone does little to reduce disclosure. Decide first whether a redacted copy is acceptable for the transaction; many identity checks require an unaltered document.
Inventory the identifying regions
Subject to the recipient's requirements, review the portrait, passport number, full name, nationality, date and place of birth, sex marker, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority, signature, personal number, and any visible visa or endorsement data.
The two machine-readable lines at the bottom are not decorative. They encode core identity and document fields in a standardized format. Redact the entire approved region rather than individual characters, and check that no edge remains machine-readable.
Treat the page as an image
Most passport PDFs are scans or phone photographs. A rectangle layered over the page does not alter the source image, which can often be extracted intact. The redaction operation must change the pixels and re-encode the image.
If OCR was applied, an invisible text layer may repeat the name, document number, and dates. Remove that text under every image mark. Also review EXIF-derived metadata, the PDF title, and the filename; phones and case systems frequently create identifying names.
Verify visually and structurally
Extract the image from the released PDF and open it separately. Search the PDF text for each field, inspect properties and attachments, and test the machine-readable region with an appropriate scanner if your risk model calls for it. Check thumbnails and earlier revisions as well as the main page.

What is the machine-readable zone on a passport?
It is the standardized character block near the bottom of the identity page that encodes document and identity data. It must be reviewed as sensitive data, not page decoration.
Can I safely place a black box over a passport scan?
No. Unless the tool edits and re-encodes the image, the original passport pixels remain embedded and may be extracted.
Should I redact a passport before an identity check?
Ask the recipient. Altering the copy may make it unacceptable, and the correct approach may be a secure approved channel rather than redaction.
